WHAT CAUSES HYPERPROLACTINEMIA?
Hyperprolactinemia usually occurs as a result of any or more of the following:

  1. Formulation Of A Tumor: Where a benign(non-cancerous and mild) tumor develops in the pituitary gland, the growth would cause the secretion of excessive prolactin and at the same time decrease other hormones.
  1. Diseases: A disease that affects the hypothalamus(a small portion of the brain which is located near the pituitary gland) would result to hyperprolactinemia. Examples of some of such diseases are anorexia, birth defects and genetic disorders.
  1. Kidney failure
  1. Chronic liver diseases.
  1. Injuries to the chest wall such as chest wall contusion, shingles, gun shots wounds, blunt injury to the heart, rib fractures, cardiac tamponade etc.
  1. Hypothyroidism – inability of the thyroid gland to produce the required thyroid hormones.
